When Should You Replace Your Furnace? 7 Warning Signs
March 2026 — B and W Heating and Cooling
Your furnace works hard every winter keeping your Metro East home warm. But how do you know when it is time to replace it instead of repair it? Here are 7 warning signs that your furnace may be nearing the end of its life.
1. Your furnace is over 15 years old
The average lifespan of a furnace is 15-20 years with proper maintenance. If yours is approaching or past this age, replacement may be more cost-effective than continued repairs.
2. Your energy bills are rising
An older furnace loses efficiency over time. If your heating bills have increased significantly without a change in usage, your furnace may be working harder to produce the same amount of heat.
3. You are calling for repairs frequently
If you have had multiple repairs in the last 2 years, the costs can add up quickly. A good rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than half the value of the unit, consider replacement.
4. Your home has uneven heating
Cold spots in some rooms while others are too warm can indicate that your furnace is no longer able to distribute heat effectively throughout your home.
5. The flame is yellow instead of blue
A healthy furnace flame should be blue. A yellow or flickering flame can indicate a carbon monoxide issue and should be inspected immediately.
6. Excessive dust or dry air
An older furnace may not be able to properly clean or humidify the air in your home, leading to increased dust and dry, uncomfortable air.
7. Strange noises
Banging, popping, rattling or squealing sounds from your furnace can indicate serious mechanical problems that may signal the end of its useful life.
