How to Change Your Air Filter
A simple task that makes a big difference for your HVAC system.
Changing your air filter regularly is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your HVAC system. A clean filter improves air quality, reduces energy costs and extends the life of your equipment. Here is how to do it.
Find Your Filter
Your air filter is typically located in the return air vent on your wall or ceiling, or in the air handler unit itself. Check your system manual if you are unsure.
Note the Filter Size
The size is printed on the edge of the existing filter. Common sizes include 16x20, 20x25 and 16x25. Write this down before buying a replacement.
Purchase the Right Filter
Choose a filter with the appropriate MERV rating for your needs. Higher MERV ratings capture more particles but restrict airflow more. MERV 8-11 is good for most homes.
Remove the Old Filter
Turn off your HVAC system first. Remove the old filter carefully to avoid spreading dust. Note the direction of airflow arrows on the filter.
Install the New Filter
Insert the new filter with the airflow arrows pointing toward the blower motor. Make sure it fits snugly with no gaps around the edges.
Set a Reminder
Most filters should be changed every 1-3 months. Set a reminder on your phone so you do not forget.
